Default Check Engine Light Question

I'm new to the civic forum and this is my first post, so...hi, all.

Anyway, the check engine light came on in my wife's 2004 EX and she took it into the dealer where they pulled up the code P-0134 and diagnosed a failed primary oxygen sensor. They want $475 plus labor to replace it. Here's my question:

The car runs fine, and not only that, but it is getting better fuel mileage than before the CEL came on-about 39 mpg. I would have thought mileage would suffer. Any ideas on this? I'm thinking why should I fix what ain't broke? By the way, we took the car to a local mechanic who ran a free diagnostic and came up with the same code and suggested a cheaper sensor.

Any thoughts on this??

The problem is probably causing the engine to run lean, which may prevent you from passing an emissions test. You may want to carefully check the connections before replacing the primary O2 sensor (see diagrams). You could save money by doing this job yourself.

Thanks, Ron.

I'm thinking of doing the repair myself since it's so simple. If I do need a new sensor do you think I'd be okay with one of the cheaper aftermarket parts. I've seen the Bosch sensor online for around $350, but other brands are as little as half that. Will they work with my computer?

I just haven't heard anything good said about Bosch O2 sensors. Check for the price of the replacement Honda sensor here:

I'm using a Bosch Primary O2 sensor. No problems here...
But I have OBD1 and my O2 sensor was $50. OEM Honda is $160.

RonJ, what's wrong with them?

sounds like a dead sensor, it's not getting the power that is suppose to be going to it, or the pcm is bad. It's the only three options you have on this code. Use a good volt meter and check it out.
