well that screw on the door handle that screw is almost GARENTEED to be rusted and very easy to strip the head off, what happens is people leave there windows cracked or down and rain will collect right in that pocket and sit right on that screw, very easy to rust and strip the head right off. if its to bad just buy a new screw or go to local hardware store and find something close to it.
2nd water barrier shield, they suck from factory... within a few years and hot weather the plastic bakes and turns into a hard brittle plastic, in short it just shatters if you try to remove it. easy fix for that is a thick trash bag and duct tape. i used alittle more heavy duty stuff cause my dad had some but ive also used trash bags before. just not the really cheap thin ones, and dont put the duct tape past the where the door panel coveres

BUT ANYWAYS about the first edited post..... WTF are you talking about waves? the speakers cone will always be free to move if you touch it or speaker is playing music. the speaker should always be mounted to something BUT dont over tighten the screws! if the outter rubber surround on the speaker wrinkles then its to tight on one side and the mounting flange is trying to warp and thats not good for a speaker cause it can limit the speakers travel by tightening up the surround which on some speakers can become brittle over time and break.
so just be sure the speaker is mounted flat and the screws are nice and snug but not to tight to bend the mounting flange on the speaker. dont try to limit the speakers cone travel with anything.. just remember you also screwing the speaker into PLASTIC so it cannt take to much force to strip the plastic out anyways.

maybe i got your question wrong. not quite sure exactly what you mean... pictures help

I know what he means, I just installed Alpine Type S speakers in the doors this weekend on my 00 em1.

I cut the basket off of the door panel, just like the guy with the pics. The OP is trying to explain that the magnet on the speakers is so wide (much larger diameter then stock), the magnet so strong, and the hole in the inner door so amall that the cone actually gets pulled back from the magnetism of the metal door and isn't allowed to move freely. Mine is doing the same thing. Looks like I have to cut the speaker opening in the inner door to a larger diameter to get it away from the speakers magnet. It is such a tight fit that its nearly impossible to center the speaker magnet in the opening of the door with your hands and keep it frombeing pulled to the metal door.I have installed the plastic spacer/adapter that Alpine had in the speaker box and the depth of the magnet is fine, the window clears it no problem.

Extra spacers won't do jack. I had to trim the plastic ring on the stock speaker covers already so they would still fit, The Alpine adaptor is probably a 1/4" as it is, any more "spacers" and the stock grills will not fit. Dynamat, hmmmm............Door panel probably won't fit flusk if I had some dynamat to the door. Cutting a larger diameterholein the metal inner door skinseems to be the only fix.

They look good on your car, but look at the pics ofthe 96-00 door panels that are posted on the first page of this thread. Now imagine leaving the stock grilles off and only using the grilles provided with the speakers. That would look like a hack job. Definately not something I want for my car.

cut a hole big enough for the speaker to fit in the stock grill.... and drop the speaker into that. use the grill from the new speaker and put it over it.
