Default Changing out the Gauge?

So, on my car, there's two lights that went out in the gauge on the left side awhile ago. When I took it to the dealership, they told me the lights to replace it is cheap, but the cost to take care of it was expensive because it takes a lot to get to it {pulling out the steering wheel, taking apart the dash/gauge, etc}. I decided to be really cheap and get these plug in LED lights and just plant them on the dash so it gives it more light.

Well, now it's just annoying me. If I'm going to pay for all the labor on it, why not make it custom instead of dull looking? My father did this to his on his 2002 Camaro awhile back, changing his to a white face with blue lights behind them, but he did it himself and I don't know how.

I want mine to look something like this: http://www.slickcar.com/productdetai...ProductID=1429

But I don't know if I should buy this and then get it installed, or if there's a way to get other parts and do it myself [translation, someone else while I watch]. I know an off dealer guy that can take it apart and do the work to it, but I'm not sure which is the best option for me.

Has anyone done this before and if so, what's the best method to go about this? What kind of lights do I need to get? Size/Brand

what year are we talking about? i have a 94, and all i have to do to pull the gauge is pop off the dash trim then unscrew the 4 screws that hold the gauge in. im not familliar with the newer model civics but i seriously doubt you have the remove the steering wheel to get to the cluster. who know, i could be wrong.

2001 EX Civic; it looks like the steering wheel needs to be removed, or loosened or brought down or something, and then you unscrew the bolts on the bottom and then the top and then take it out, but...I'm not really sure.

I think my car has feelings or ears or something because after I was talking about taking it to get worked on for this issue, the lights suddenly worked in the dash; all of them. Amazing!
