Default decks/head units help

This may sound dumb, but please bear with me...im new to this lol. Are most/all/no headunits universal in the way that they will all work on the same deck, or is each deck different? i was also wondering if any of you know of some good, affordable head units (but not necessarily cheep)... any help with the rest of the system would be awesome (speakers ect..i only have the stock ones). I am new to adding systems to my car, and don't want to do anything stupid. If it helps i have a 99' Civic...

btw: How much on average do you guys spend on systems?

Audio upgrades are addicting!

It's good to see that you don't want the cheapest thing out there, and have want some quality parts for your car. Most cd players nowadays are jammed with features that many people never use anyway. Even the most basic decks have preouts if you ever decide to ad an amplifier.

For $200 you can find a nice deck with iPod capability, preouts, nice sound, etc. You can get into an iPod ready Alpine cd player for $200 easily.

pretty much all the common aftermarket ones will...you will just have to add a delete tray under or above it....id go with an eclipse headunit they are the best bang for your buck

They should all wire up, but it will be easier if you bought an aftermarket connector to connect to your car, or you will need to be splicing into the factory stuff and that gets hard.

if your talking about the size of the head unit, most do. In a civic (all i think but some might be different) you can fit whats called a "single din" cd player easily. A single din is most likely every cd player youve ever seen. A double din are the size of those screens. All you would need to get is the mounting hardware (10-20$ at best buy, circuit city or any car audio shop in the area) so it will close in the gap where the old radio was, and highly recomend getting a wiring harness for it. It isnt necesary, but when you can go red to red, black to black instead of red to faded green with orange line..ect. i think its worth the 15$.

As for actual head unit recomendations, i dont know what your budget is, but alpine is a solid company for head units, i doubt youll be disappointed. A decent entry level head unit would run you 150 to 200 bucks, as for the "how much do we spend" question, its all personal preferance but you get addicted, ive sunk about $1200 so far and havent touched my speakers yet, lol.

Single DIN AND double DIN will work in a Civic (according to Crutchfield.com... at least an '00 EX...)

Aftermarket receivers are all set to industry standards. There are only a few that won't fit... if you are curious... most places to buy a deck will have a configurator... check Crutchfield.com.. they have one... Best Buy has one (not sure if it's on their site, though)

AND... I agree with the others... get the wiring harness... MUCH more simple... and if you ever want to put the stocker back in... you can... easily.

Those are great suggestions..what if forgot to mention is that since i got my car used, there was already a head unit in there. I don't have the stock one anymore. I have a decent 1 tho..I have the Sony CDX-L350...But I wanted to upgrade it, then upgrade my speakers and such. So does what ur saying still work with this older head unit?
