installing '98 civic lx aftermarket keyless entry system
Hi, so I just bought a cheapo aftermarket keyless entry system for my Civic just to be able to lock and unlock the doors remotely (don't care about anything else really) and it came with no instructions so I'm trying to figure out the best way to hook this thing up. Should I just splice into the wires on the ignition switch harness or is there an easier way? Btw, I do have an aftermarket radio, and no I don't want to get a stock deck and use the factory keyless entry. Thanks in advance for the replies!
Get yourself a pair of side strippers:
RadioShack® Heavy-Duty Automatic Wire Cutter/Stripper - RadioShack.com
Using the side strippers you can expose wires from the ignition harness without having to fully cut the wire.
From the ignition harness you will use the following:
white - constant 12 volts
black/yellow - ignition (12 volts only with ignition on)
Now in the driver kick you will find a blue plug that has a green/white and a green/orange plug. These are your lock wires. They are a negative polarity. Meaning they will show 12 volts on a meter at rest and drop to 0 volts when activated.
Make sure the lock/unlock output wires of your keyless entry system are a negative output. If they are not you will need to wire relays to reverse polarity.
Connect your lock wire to the green/white wire and your unlock wire to the green/orange wire.
Connect your power wire of the system to the white 12 volt wire of the ignition harness. There should also be a wire that needs to be connected to ignition (typically yellow). Connect this wire to the black/yellow wire of the ignition.
Connect the ground wire to a good chassis ground of the vehicle.
