just adding a sub
Adding a sub without adding an amp would sound like ****, adding a sub or two and a small amp would be better then nothing.
Adding a sub without upgrading the factory speakers would sound fine, as long as the sub is amped. After you get some bass you don't notice the factory speakers distortion as much anyway.
Hope that helps answer your question.

a sub isn't a replacement for quality speakers, but with a sub putting out the bass, your speakers do less work in the bass area meaning they don't distort as much and sound better.
good speakers and a good sub/amp combo would be the best option, but just adding the sub/amp will sound fine.

yea adding a sub and amp setup does not affect the speakers, atleast not in a negative way, it does take some of the strain of the bass off like he said, itsbasically two seprate systemsthat can run either or, or both, speakers and/or sub+amp.
