B1, I wonder if you ever did this., and how your car survived if you did.
According to the service manual:
- make sure you have anti-theft code for the radio
- remove glove box (unscrew two bolts #32)
- pry shifter panel from inside out, accesing through the glove box opening
- unscrew the shifter **** and remove shifter panel with boot (# 13)
- remove two bolts (#31)holding the lower part of the radio panel.
- pull out the whole radio panel (#7 plus #11)
- unsrew and remove radio
See this pic for iilustration and numbers - sorry, the best I could find on the net...

Misha you can pop the trim off around the radio, take the bottom cd storage compartment out, and you'll be able to pull the radio out, I have done this and also got the code for the cd player. And actually, my bottom tray comes out on a regular basis so somebody broke it, but i'm pretty sure you can take that trim off around the cd storage area and head unit and get to the screws, undo screws before you start yanking.
Bottom trim around the center console...then the two screws UNDER the radio, then you carefully pull the whole radio, and heater controls out together. Try and use a teflon, or plastic tool to pry with, not a flat tip screw driver....your DASH WILL SUFFER THE WRATH.

Well, than my bad bashing the guy. [

Still think shop manual gives - mmmm - safer way. In terms of possibility of breaking something...
