Question Sound System Newb, need help choosing faceplate, sub, and speakers

Ok so i have a very basic understanding of sound system but one thing i know nothing about is subs. I want to install a sub in my '98 Cx so that i can have clear bass but if it is avoidable i would like to save the space (is it hard to make a box to fit behind the rear wheel well?) and dont want to buy an amp if possible? I have seen faceplates that have sub outs and things of the such but would i still need an amp? What should i be looking at in a faceplate? Most faceplates are 50X4 but sony sells 52X4(just gimmics though right?) I understand that that is the max output of the speakers and RMS is usually 22X4(or atleast in the ones i have seen). Which brings me to speaker RMS what is this? i see speakers that have like max watts 460 or like 250 but without an amp does this make any difference, they will only recieve a max of 50 ever right? Also without an amp would i not really have to worry about blowing my speakers right aslong as they are tested for above 50 watts max and 22rms? also whats the difference between ways? like i see speakers that are 4 way 5 way and like 1 way what difference does it make what should i look for? are there any speakers that would give clear enough bass as to not even need a sub (preferable) and i guess what i mean by clear bass is just being able to blast like Amilli all day without distortion :P.

And that reminds me.... i have a pair of Pioneer 6X9's in the rear which my dad gave me, last time they were used they sounded great but now not so much? could i just be the really crappy stock Casset player? or have the speakers just gotten old(sitting in heated garage for around 2 or 3 years)

Any information will be great i got a month before i can drive the car (16 right now no license till 17) so i am not in that much of a hurry.

Thanks

RMS wattage is the real number to compare on. "Max" wattage is pure hype. A few watts one way or the other will not be noticeable. Choose a head unit for the features you want rather than because it has a couple more watts.

Head unit "sub out" is low level, so you always need an external amp to run a subwoofer. Though there are some that have the amp built into the woofer box. You will still need to run a power wire to the unit for that.
