Default wiring questions

ok. im starting to understand the different ways of wiring subs to get different impedance levels and all that.

i do not however understand the difference between 1 ohm and 2 ohms. when i look at diagrams of both of them they look pretty much the same to me. im pretty sure that i have my amp bridged to 2 ohms right now. i drew a diagram of my wiring setup so you guys can either tell me im right or tell me im an idiot. ha

what is the difference in wiring between 1 ohm and 2 ohms?

secondly.. im looking for a new amp because sony amps blow hard.

i found some amps that seem decent and are in my price range and im wondering what you guys think of them.

i like this alpine unit. its a little pricy tho. what do you guys think?

im also lookin at this kenwood amp.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1166840602693
what do you guys think about this one? i havent heard much good talk about kenwood. but it seems to look pretty good. its fan cooled which is a plus.. and is why im getting rid of my sony amp (it overheats in a quick jiffy). have any of you had experience with kenwood or have any feedback on them?

thanks

When I had two subs I used ch1 for the left sub and ch2 for the right sub. That's the only difference I see.

Ok, basicly to me, 1 ohm is just a better setup for more power, but you usualy won't find it until you start dumping thousands into competition equipment. The only real difference between 1 ohm and 2, is that 1 will run hotter on your amp, but usualy supply more overall power.

A crappy example would be like having to fill a swimming pool. 4 ohms = garden hose, 2ohms = fire hose, 1 ohm = garden and fire hose running together to fill the pool. Don't ask where I came up with that, it's late.

However, you don't want to run a 1ohm setup unless your amp is stable at 1ohm, thats the biggie really. Most amps only bridge under 4ohms, but alot of people bridge them to 2 anyway. It's not really going to hurt anything, but it can degrade the amp overtime, and kill it quicker. Thats my undertstanding anyway. I am bridging my amp to 2, and I am sure it suggests 4, I don't even really remember what ohm/voice coil setup I even have without opening the box.

You have yours wired just like I do. Depending on your subs voice coils, dual or single, and ohm raiting, you should be getting the best power for your money like you have it. But remember, if your running a sony amp, bridging it like that, to 2 ohms could be harmful to the amp, and thats why it is blowing so bad. If you ran it normal in series, it might not overheat as much. My amp overheats in the summer if I run it for more then an hour hard or so, it's just a fact of life for some lower end amps :-(.

As for kenwood, I don't have alot of experience there, but I would do some hard core research before i dropped a few hundred on anything. It could end up being just like your sony.

PS: I like that alpine you picked out, but try to find it cheaper then Crutchfield, look around. Try sonicelectronicx.com and stuff, there might be a better deal.

Thanks a lot stu. I understand the difference between 1 ohm and 2 ohms as far as performance and things like that. I was asking about the wiring. I don't see a difference between my setup and a 1 ohm setup. Keep in mind that I don't plan on rollin around all the time with it wired up to 1 ohm.. But maybe if I decide to enter a local comp or something I'd like to know how to do it.

And I have done a lot of research on both the alpine amp and the kenwood. The problem is I still don't know all of the technical mumbo jumbo that is associated with amp and sub specifications (as was displayed in my post about mosfet and crossovers and things like that). So when I go to research it its like I'm reading a different language. Pretty much the only thing I understand when I read about amps is rms wattage... 1 or 2 ohm stable, mono, 2 channel etc, and none of that stuf really has anything to do with the questions I have. Lol. Cuz I want an amp that's going to pound, but I don't want to pay a lot for it and I definitely don't want it to just shut down on me like my sony. I've heard mixed reviews about kenwood.. Some people say I'd be better off with my sony than with the kw... but some people say kw is amazing for the money so idk. I really like the alpine but I don't wanna spend 300 for it. Maybe ill just try to find that one cheaper.

But yea if someone could show me a diagram for 2 ohms and 1 ohm and then point out the difference that would be fantastic. Thanks = )

well, the difference isn't really in the wire up, its in the speakers. If you have your subs wired that way, depending on what they are, voice coil / ohms, they will either be 1 or 2 ohms.

http://www.crutchfield.com/learningc...p;amptype=mono here's a 2DVC 2-ohm setup at 2 ohms

http://www.crutchfield.com/learningc...p;amptype=mono here's the 2DVC 4-ohm setup, which they used to show wired up as 1 ohm as well, they have changed the site around alot.

I am in a hurry atm, poke around there looking at the different wire ups, that might give you a visual reference.

1 and 2 ohm and 4 ohm the difrence starts with the subs the difrence between 1,2 and 4 ohm is how much resistance you have what size wire the coil is made off the thiner the wire the more resistance there will be is one better than the other no it all depends on the rest of the equipment you have if you get 2 4 ohm single voice coil subs and run them to a 1 ohm stable amp your not going to get the power the amp is capable of because you have more resistance (running it at 2 ohm ) your not letting as much power flow from the amp so your going to have a cleaner power than if you were to run it at 1 ohm that it is capable of. the kenwood sony and alpine amps are not bad but I would look into something like the memphis MTX kicker even hifonics something like that woofersetc.com is a good site to get something from.
