Water is worse on particle board than it is onMDF though. If you want it to be more waterproof, (not 100%) put a couple payers of clear coat on it. At my work I build kitchen cabinets. We use MDF for white and black kitchens, and if there's a nice layer of clearcoat all around the outside, there shouldn't be a lot of water damage if your trunk ends up letting in moisture.
