Idle Air Control Valve
yes you need it. its helps stabilize the idle at a normal level. so when your a/c kicks on it does't stall your engine, or when your parking and the power steering is running at high pressure and putting excessive drag on the motor at idle, it will stay at the same rpm.
its also used as a signal to the ecu to determine injector pulse width along with many other sensors in your car.
