Default Interchangability of alternators?

88-91 are listed as interchangeable. I can get other year alternators cheaper but want to know if they'll swap. Looking at them on eBay they look identical to each other - at least up to 2000 models. My application is a '90 standard HB 1.5L MT.

Washed the engine bay last night and she gave off a little puff of smoke... Toasted!

junkyard it bro. Then again u wanna replace things on ur car once. Ever consider investing in a Stinger? That think will allow u to run a small city with ur car.......and last a long time too.

I hate this car. I work on it more than i drive it. F*** that POS. I was cleaning it to take pictures for its eBay listing when the alt went. It has WAY to many new parts and they keep on breaking. Brand new parts! Like the reman CV that gave up after 2K miles. Or the clutch that puked up the pressure plate after 6K. How bout having to remove the brake master cylinder to get the alternator out. Couldn't do that this time so i took off the oil filter and removed the drivers axle. Makes me want to puke. This was the car's second alternator that i got from a junkyard for $14. Bummer cause it'll cost $35 now.

Thanks anyway to all who posted.

FYI i found after compairing parts at the junkyard that 92-96 (only one i found) have the same or similar mounting brackets but a different wire harness. Both appeared to be 4 prong plugs. If you did a little splicing i bet it would could work... Also found a DSM alternator marked Mitsubishi on the back that was *almost* exactly the same. Prongs on plug were slightly larger and harness looked the same. I'm reasonably sure that it would mount up in a pinch.

Now! The new oil filter is back on and the axle back in place. Lets see if the CRX model that Moyer's sold me in Crestline works.

This is why my engine bay looks like a D15 got murdered in it.

LOL. Guess all that engine degreaser was a waste. The pressure washer was the killing stroke thought. Motor looked great untill i drove to town just now for another beer... Without the oil cap on! Splash! Wondered why there was smoke coming from under my hood [&:]

Went to a well known independent import shop and they quoted me $170 for a rebuild. "And not those cheep chines parts you get at autozone either." Lol. Like they though i'd buy that line.

$170? For a complete rebuild? Can that be right?

Dunno... Guess they saw all the grease and grass (i landscape) and thought ! ! ! ! Plus i talk like a local hick. The OEM part is less. "But ours won't break anytime soon" they said. BS. I left. I just feel bad for the junkyard that wanted my used alt. in exchange. I beat the housing down trying to squeeze it past the axle with a crowbar and sledge hammer. Real Bad Idea. Cracked the armature bad. Like scrap only bad. Oh well. what do i care? Autozone will just give me a new axle if i break this one. Easy come easy go. BTW car is for sale. Many new parts. I expect $750 from eBay auction but would take less if someone would move it from my property...... NOW!

I couldn't tell you how many things i do myself because i walked in to some business expecting service and someone wanted to take me for a ride. Yes, i wanted alternator service then but needed tranny service on my truck soon which is at least $700 billable. For that i'll put in a stage 1 clutch and plate while its appart and all new seals back to the rear pinion. AND AmsOil everywhere! My KA24E motor loves it and i want to put it in the trans, transfer and diffs.
