Default New Civic owner, Gas Mileage Question

Hello everyone.

New member here, and a new Civic owner as of 2 days ago. I got a 2007 Honda Civic EX with Navigation. My first ever NEW Car. Very exiting.

I am probably being paranoid or don't know how a new car works exactly, but regarding the gas mileage. I got it with a full tank of gas, and with mostly freeway driving, i had the trip set to 0. Now a few days later I am nearly at half a tank it shows, but I have only went 130 miles. For a car I understand that get in the upper 400 for mileage on a tank of gas, I'm just hoping maybe it comes from the second half of the tank? Or do new cars need time to improve Gas Mileage?

Thanks. I feel like I am asking a dumb question but I just want peace of mind.

your new car is fine, i guarantee you. also, keep in mind that the EPA standards do not apply to your typical driver. in order to get the estimated MPG, you need to accelerate like an old lady, keeping the rpms REALLY REALLY low.

here's something general that applies to most cars: when the needle goes to E, you still have quite a bit to go before it'll run out of gas (which i HIGHLY don't recommend trying!). if the gas guage read F, and it was a hot day, the guage will go down a little once you let the temp fall.

your car is advertised to get 29 MPG, but really, expect less than that.

29 for city or Highway? According to the sticker and reviews and all that, it's suppose to be about 30/40.

Thanks for replying though. Yeah my old car I swear would still have about 2 gallons even when I got to the "red area." It always seemed to me the Cars have some kind of resivoir the gas gauge doesn't pick up to give you sort of a "Safety net" So I guess it seems the Honda is no exception. So when I get down to the last "Tick" on the gauge readout, I can expect to still have a few gallons left?

yea, but don't run it dry; you'll damage the fuel pump. btw, is your car an auto or manual?

Oh, Auto. No clue how to drive an Manual. And since this is basically my "Family Car" as I am getting married in 4 months, definately have to go with Auto.

Still a little concerned about this. On my second tank now, been accelerating slower, trying to improve my driving habits. I've always had a lead food, and don't keep my speed constant.

I was all expecting my car to get 400 miles to the tank full, 100 more than my 2001 POS car. Right now my new Civic is barely matching it. The second tank Im on does seem to be lasting a little better.

Im also hoping it improves a little after that 1000 mile break in period.

I love my first new car but ugh..disapointing gas mileage, water spots on the glass I can't get off, and also my first scratch. Boy life can take the fun out of things!

My first few tanks were bad too, but now i am at 7k miles and i get 400+ miles to a tank.

btw, i have found the 30/40 estimate to be accurate. i have broken 40mpg with a decent amount of highway driving, and i have never gotten below 30 MPG (not counting the first few tanks.) also, i found when the first brick below F in the meter goes out, i am down to about 3/4 tank.

Mine has been getting better too, thank Goodness. Changing Gas Brands may of helped too.

Yeah I had notice the same thing about the Guage. The manual lies! According to it, you have 2 gallons left when the E comes on. I got to that point, then down to NO Blocks left and was actually worried I had went too far down. But then I filled my tank and it wouldn't take any more than 10.5 gallons. It's a 13 gallon Tank. So I figure you still have over 2 gallons when you are down to no blocks.

Nice little safety net they seem to have build into the Gas Guage. I do wish it was a bit more accurate though!

sometimes you might fill it up just enough to where it reads full but then you go 5 miles and it loses a bar. my LX i used to have, would go like 70 miles b4 the first bar died down. then it would drop fast to half a tank and so on. is it coupe or sedan? i had the coupe so maybe the sedan doesnt get as good of mile due to weight or design(aero) or something else. if you go 55-60 and or set cruise control you will notice beter milage. dont do that tho until car is broken in at like 1,000 miles. you want to rev and drive at diff rpms and stuff, but i guess auto you cant really control it unless you do short bursts. fill that puppy up next time an extra 2-3$ after the gas pump clicks off. as you said the tank is 13 gal and safety switch kicks in anywhere from 10.5-11.5 gal. you can deff throw in an extra gal. if wanted.

hey adamation..i too am a new owner of a civic but mine is a manual. the mpg on the si is alittle lower than the civics but i noticed that my gas decreased so quickly.i was getting worried...also when i bought the car the gas wasn't filled all the way!! bastards. it was maybe 2-3 bars down...seemed like the car was test driven a lot cuz it already had 50 miles on it. anyway, i'm at around 400 miles and filled my tank twice (half way empty when i filled it both times) and am waiting to see how the mileage is. glad to hear that once u break the car in u get better mileage.
