Default Tuning for EFFICIENCY!?!?

I have heard a couple people talking about tuning a turbo for efficiency and was wondering if this was possible and how it is done. I don't need a huge technical answer, just something like, "Oh you simply set the timing to 999 and then the elf in your ECU pops out and uses his little legs to give you extra power so your engine can take a break and use less fuel."

Well if you are tuning with an OBDI chipped ecu try to get the a/f ratio to 14.7 from like 1 to 5 or 6 on the load then from 7 to 10 go a little richer, 13-13.5 on an all motor engine and probably 12 to 1 on a turbocharged engine for power at wot. Keep timing conservative, advanced might help a little so you have more low end power and don't have to rev as high driving around town. Same thing with a stand alone... You have an 05 though so you don't have many options.

so, are you looking for efficiency (as in higher mpg's) or performance, cause you can't have both.

Theres a local guy who took a d15b, did minor bolt ons, and fine tuned the maps so that he was pulling 50mpgs average, so that can definitely be done

I can tell you how it works in a fairly simple answer. You need an EMS that will take control of timing/fuel curves among ECT/IAT/etc sensor calibrations to make the car run more-or-less perfect.

How you do it took me over a year of reading and practice to get good at. So you'll be better off paying for someone else to do it.

Oh, and the EMS for your car is like $800+.
