All stock D16's kick in at 5700rpm. basically it lets you ride that VTEC high longer than stock. That's it. on JR's website, they dyno'd a prelude with a blower and the VTEC controller. Adding the VTEC controller added 12 hp to the wheels!!!!!!!

I think it's the drop-off point, not the engagement.

anyone who really listens for the vtec to kick in knows it's not until 5500-5700rpm. with a m/t, just get to third gear and very slowly accelerate. You will hear the engine completely change tone and start to pull harder. the unit is primarily used with boosted engines. But for us N/A's out there, the more mods you have, the more noticable the gain will be. But until 5700rpm there is no vtec. I AM POSITIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok vtec 101 here we go!- your basic camshaft has one lobe per valve. on a vtec, there are three lobes for the intake valves. I'm will quess to say that the first is for idle-3000rpm. second would be for the 3000-5500rpm range. the last, most aggressive lobe is 5500-redline. don't qoute me but that is how i would interpret the ecstacy that is VTEC!!!!!

so whats the lowest rpm range that you can pick for the vtec to kick in? in theory then, if you can make it kick in 4500 rpms, you should be hauling *** right. you get your hp faster right?

Correct, It shouldn't ADD more horsepower but you should reach peak HP faster, adding more fuel might give you a little HP, but basically like said above you ride the VTEC high longer. Back when my car was stock I had a VAFC. I wanted to knwo if it really worked, so I raced a 1998 Suburu 2.5 RS, once with stock settings, once with the vtec lowered with a little extra fuel. I lost on stock settings, but I won with the changes. We even tried it a third time to make sure and I still beat him by a noticable amount, he was pissed. It was about two carlengths difference. Then I added nitrous and I was way faster than him lol, but that's a different story.

Also I know that my civic vtec was 5700 but if I remember correctly the 92-95's kick in at 5400.

hmmm, sweet, so when you're talking about the vtec point lowered, extra fuel being added, is that also dialed in from the vtec controller? Also, this can be done with a turbo set up right? How about the wear and tear, is it bad for the vtec to lower the point of engagement?
