Default New to hondas...what is possible with a 96LX

I have the option to buy a 96 Civic LX for cheap(motor is toast) one problem

Ive always owned Nissans, and never looked into civics. I know squat about hondas, i dont know what engines will swap into what. im not looking for anything outrageous or expensive. Just want to know what would be a good base engine to put in. something i can hopefuly one day build on.

Any tips or advice welcome

thanks

Does money factor into this equation, or are you loaded?

How much do you want to spend?

Are you doing the work yourself?

Do you want it to be a 5 speed?

Ill be doing it myself, i can handle most tasks, provided it doesnt involve welding anything. right now money is a factor, looking to spend 3k total, and the LX is a 5 speed, but imma guess the current transmission probably wont work with anything else

thanks

if you just want a cheap motor to get you around, get another d16y7, if you want a little more power, go for a sohc vtec d16y8. you should get either for a couple/few hundred bucks. and your tranny will work. the vtec will take a little more wiring to work, but its over 20 hp more, so its really worth it.
