I have a 95 4dr lx.

A month ago, I started having problems with the engine overheating, accompanied by engine surges in neutral and park. I was losing coolant rapidly, completely emptying the radiator in less than 24 hrs. The coolant appeared to be leaking from underneath the timing belt cover, so I figured a water pump seal was shot.

I took out the water pump (my first self-done car job), and the seals looked OK but I replaced the pump anyway. I put car back together and everything worked again for two weeks. Now I'm having the same symptoms again - overheating, rapid loss of coolant, engine surges, and coolant is pouring out from underneath the timing belt cover.

My questions:

1. Is there anything else other than the water pump that could be leaking from underneath the timing belt cover?
2. If not, could something (a blocked hose, a leak, etc.) cause a new water pump to fail in two weeks? Maybe I didn't tighten the bolts enough?

Any ideas?

Are you saying you installed a new pump and it is still leaking? Or are you saying you took the pump off and them reinstalled the same pump?

 

I replaced the old pump with a new one. It initially seemed to fix the problem, but the leaking has now begun again (2 weeks later).

 

Maybe a long shot but, the seal where the gasket goes maybe worn. Put some RTV all over the gasket. That should seal it up nice if that is the problem.

And the by "the seal where the gasket goes" I mean the recess in the block. Im sure you know what Im talking about if youve replaced it.
