Default D16Z6/Y8 which has more potential?

After you turbocharge both, which has more potential?

All in how you build it, you could make a geo metro 3 banger have more potention if you had the money. If you have the C-notes you can do anything

Pretty much... I'd personally rock the z6 solely due to more basic timing, hence easier to tune. Not to mention the y-series have the dreaded bottom end oiling issues.

I guess i should have elaborated. I meant if you were to turbocharge both stock engines with all the same mods.

Stock engine with the proper tune and the exact same setup... assuming the Y8 managed to stay together it would make more power. Not much, but a little bit.

Y8 has a smaller quench pad area which means higher compression. This is the reason for it's eratic timing as it needs less timing to ignite the combustion fully due to it's head and cam design. In short, it's facking weird, hard to tune, but makes good power.

On the other hand I prefer the Z6 platform as it has a much better oil pump and is less prone to spinning bearings and shooting rods through the block (right Tony). It is also a lot easier to tune compared to the Y series engines and their erratic timing curves. The ability to run more timing = more power in the long run so with good rods and pistons you can push the Z6 further than you can push the Y8. Ryan Smith runs in the Q16 class with a 568whp 76mm D16Z6. However the first ever Vitara setup to go 10s was in a D16Y8 (442whp [Vitara setup = rods, vitara pistons, stock sleeves]) where there are quite a few other Z6 engines running Vitaras that are still yet to break the 10s.

What it comes down to is if you use a Y8 you will need to port and shim the oil pump to increase it's flow so that you don't spin bearings, and you will need to find a tuner who knows the difference between a Z6 and a Y8 or else you will be blowing headgaskets very often at the very least... if you push enough boost you'll blow the engine on a Z6 timing curve (most often used timing curve used by tuners for all D16s).

That's about all I got for you.
