Default Disturbing Noise

So my car has about 127,000 miles and recently it has started making a strange noise. It's definately in the engine somewhere and sounds like a very fine whistling/whining sound that's making me nervous. I'm fearing that a bearing or the piston ring is going. I want to make sure that the engine is okay for this complete top end swap that i'm planning to do. any ideas would be awesome!!

Did you check your belts? I think they make a whining sound if they are going bad.

Does it happen in a certain rpm range?

Well seeming that it's so Fu88ing cold up here, i hear it most when i first start the car and its running high to warm up. But i also here it in the top end when i shift. I would hope it wasn't the timing belt or pump because they were both changed at 90k.
