head gasket
Hey anyone can tell me an estimate for replacing a head gasket on a civic 93 lx. My fathers car has problems and the mechanic quoted 900+ for parts and labor. My father don't wanna do it and rather get a new car.thx
That price isn't out of the question, but maybe you could get 100 off calling around? The price also depends on your area, so for my southern california/los angeles perspective, that price seems okay.
haha, yeah, i've done my own head gasket and timing belt swaps, too. I figure that tano001 doesn't know how and doesn't have all the necessary tools. Learning how to get the head off the first time (

lol nah nowhere near ready to even try that i'll stick to bacis diy lol but damn so 860+ for labor?! thats crazy well my father rushed into like a dumbass and decided to donate his car. it was a 99 civic lx with 132k miles i think
It's not impossible. I had to take the head off of my '87 civic after I snapped a spark plug in half while trying to torque it in. I was unemployed and living with my parents at the time, so I had plenty of time to do it. It took me over a month, but I replaced a lot of parts going in. That engine is probably harder to work on than most na 4 cylinder engines, since there's 40+ vacuum tubes for emissions control. Still, I learned a lot by doing it. Where there's a problem, there's an opportunity.

It cost me about $40 for my car... I did it myself.

I remember that I ordered a gasket kit from rockauto, which included the intake, exhaust, head, egr, valve cover and oil pan gaskets. I think it was 80 bucks. I have some leftover gaskets from that kit that I didn't replace, too. One of them is for the catalytic converter/downpipe and some I don't recognize[8D]
Oh yeah, and if you ever order from rockauto, be sure to google "rockauto coupon codes" first. They always have a 5% off code floating out there.

I didn't get a gasket kit... just the head gasket. My valve cover gasket is probably no more than a year old so it didn't need replaced, reused the header gasket successfully, didn't remove the intake so no need for that one, and I installed ARP head studs at the same time so I didn't need to buy new head bolts.
