Default is my head vtec?

I own a 97 civic ex sedan. the number on the block says d16y8, which everywhere i have researched tells me that it is vtec yet i do not feel the engagement point. I have a catback exhhaust, headers, and a cold air intake so far yet i still cannot feel a distinct engagement point. Can you guys let me know a surefire way of determining if the head is vtec or not? thanks.

Surefire way. Look for the vtec solenoid...should be to the left of the head...looks kinda/sorta like a bell.

Yes the D16Y8 engine is the VTEC engine. the engagement point is 5700rpm. the easiest way for me to hear it is in a higher gear try 3rd. shift into the gear and put it to the boards, just hold the pedal down the whole time. at 70 or so MPH listen and be prepared to be amazed!!!!!!

Is it bad to run the engine hard once in a while? For example, go close to red lining it but not passing it?

Yeah i have the solenoid but i have been told bya couple friends that my car is not vtec. What can i look for when taking the valve cover off to see if it is vtec ie. oil lines, cam lobes, etc...
