Is the CEL ON?

Does the engine leak oil?

Check Engine Light (see link in my signature).

Ideas
When you say burning smell, it makes me think of oil or coolant dripping on the hot exhaust system, an electrical short, or possibly the clutch slipping.

More detailed information would help. For example, what is the type of burning smell? Where does the odor seem to be coming from? Under what exact conditions is the odor produced?

Look for a leak that is allowing oil to drip onto the header. A leaky valve cover gasket seems like a candidate.
