actually my valve cover has oil all over where the gasket would be how can i get a better seal

First use a torque wrench to retorque each of the valve cover bolts. If this does not stop the oil leak, then pull the valve cover off and replace the gasket:

Do you have smoke coming out of the tail pipe?

Also remember to dab a little black silicone on all the corners of the valve cover gasket. ALL of the corners, any where there is a sharp point.
