When does VTEC kick in on a 98 Civic EX?
Hey, I have a 98 Civic EX with the stock D16y8 engine, just about everything is stock too. I was just wondering when VTEC kicks in. I've noticed a BIT of a jump at about 5,000 rpm, but it feels NOTHING like in my brother's GSR. I know the VTEC in a D16y8 is a bit whimpy, but man, I'd expect more than I've felt from it. :P

vtec is almost not noticale on most d series, there is a slight bump in power, but it is usually so small that u cant feel it, if you have an itake u can usually hear it, u dont hear it like u do on a B series because d series vtec is only on the intake side.

Ahhh that makes sense. I knew it wouldn't be like my brothers Integra's because they both have a lot more hp and are DOHC. When Vtec kicks in on a Integra, its freaking crazy. My brotheris convinced I didn't have VTEC because we were driving around trying to get it to kick in but really only felt and heard something once or twice.

listen for it at 4800rpm... it's when it hits on z6's and y8's. Just don't expect much.... it took me about 4 or 5 tries before I could even hear it (I have i/h/e, so it's sort of noticeable)... make sure your radio's off when you try to hear it lol

Yeah... I can't even hear my engine AT ALL when my stereo is up a little less than half. Ahh, I love my system. :P
If I really TRY to hear it I think I notice a little something. Hahaha. Really sad. :P
