Default Worth it to Beef up the stock 1.5l engine?

I just bought a 1995 Honda Civic EX with a 1.5l........just started with tuning and honestly have no clue about what the motor has as far as vtec goes.....just now trying to learn everything....but as of right now i am working on a low budget and i was wonderin if it would even be worht the time to beef up the stock engine or if i should wait until i could perform the infamous motor swap (either k20 or type r?) but once again not even sure about the swap. Just joined today so any help would be greatly appreciated.

You have a D16Z6. Plenty of potential there, don't waste money on a swap that you could use to piece together an entire turbo kit.
