2006 Civic Review in USA Today
This is interesting because the reviewer is pretty tough. For example, he didn't think much of the highly-touted 07 Camry.
Anyway, here's the link to the civic review:

(He really likes the SI.)

that review was spot on, even the gripes.
the writer pointed out how tricky the new shifter and pedal engagement is in the non-si models. I noticed that pretty quickly when i got my EX coupe.
the accelerator pedal is mounted on the floor, like a porsche 911 and it gets some getting used to. but it actually makes heel and toe shifting easier because of the length of the pedal.
as for the shifter, mine was definitely clunky when i first got it. I think honda bulked up the synchros for this new model. Regardless, my shifter smoothed out over time and now feels pretty smooth, but not buttery smooth like my 93 civic.
all-in-all a really good and impartial article.
