Default Civic alarms

Stupid question, but:
I just bought my daughter a 2002 EX and she's having problems with the alarm that we can't figure out with the manual. If the car is unlocked and you open the door and close it again, like to retrieve something from inside or to open the hood, the alarm goes off about 2 or 3 minutes later. Sometimes we're nowhere near the car by then or don't have the keys in our hands. Is there some special procedure to disable the alarm like click it twice or something. It's a factory alarm
Thanks for any help.
