I'm the wrong one to go to for carfax. It's too easy to get around having something reported for me to pay money for it.

But two cross-members costing $1500 at an alignment shop doesn't mean a head gasket job will cost more. On the phase II Subaru 2.5L SOHC (EJ251 engine) replacing head gaskets at a dealership (I'm a dealer tech) will cost approximately $1200 out-the-door. That's two head gaskets, two intake gaskets, two exhaust gaskets, and two valve cover gaskets, as well as fluids and chemicals and miscellaneous parts (hose clamps, valve cover bolt washers, oil filter, etc). A SOHC Honda would be one head gasket, one intake gasket, one exhaust gasket, and one valve cover gasket. The Honda would also have less labor as it's much more straightforward replacing the head gasket on an inline engine than it is on a horizontally-opposed engine, not to mention one head vs. two.

$150-$200/hr? You guys have it rough up there. I have yet to hear of a labor rate much more than $100/hr at a dealership in this area.

But head gasket jobs tend to be close to 90% labor (I mean literally almost 90%). The parts are actually fairly cheap compared to the total cost of the job.
