I plan on getting a Honda civic EX vtec. I was wanting to make it fast for fun. I have the money for a turbo and was wondering if I should get it or not. I've heard good and bad things about them o an automatic.
1) Is it going to tear my car up on an automatic?
2) is it even going to make that much of a difference?
3) Is there anything else you can do to an automatic to make it pretty fast?

 

1. yes, it will tear up your automatic tranny. these cars were built for economy.

2. it might give your car some boost, but only until the tranny dumps on you. and that might happen in your first drive with the turbo on.

3. no.

My EX manual is running fine with a turbo....have had it for over 8 months with that setup.

Just don't cheap out on parts/engine build if you want a turbo setup. Find one that's a stick, at least slap some pistons and rods, get a decent turbo and a tune.

 

you wouldn't HAVE to get an SI. Just don't get an auto.

like inthezoneac said, a d-series mated to a manual tranny will hold up fine with a turbo and a PROPER TUNE. Thats the kicker. And no, you dont neccessarily need pistons and rods.... it depends on what kinda numbers you are looking for. No matter what, you need to have a good tune after the parts are installed to ensure longevity.

 

i dont know i bout the "newer" motors, but i know the d16z6 (92-95 EX and SI motor) is good for up to 250HP if the motor is in really good condition..., personally i wouldnt go over 220 though.... and if im not mistaken, the d16y8 (96-00 EX and SI) is good for the same numbers, but they are more **** to spinning the main bearings due to fewer oiling ports on the crank. Anything newer than that i dont know much about.

x2 on the proper tune. with out a proper tune, you basing throwing your motor in the trash... of course, it may drive for months, or you could grenade it on the first startup.
