Default Clunk Drive to Reverse

I had a clunk sound when I would go from reverse to drive, and drive to reverse. I searched many threads, all similar to mine seemed to end with no resolution.
I am at 100,000 miles. As part of routine maintenance, new axles, control arms with new bushings and ball joints installed. 3 out of four motor mounts replaced due to tears in rubber. Spark plugs, Timing belt, water pump, tensioner, PS, alternator, AC belts changed.
The car runs great, but I still had the clunk. Checked tie rod ends, tightened sub frame bolts, checked brakes, struts, torque at front axle nuts, and just about everything else I could think of.
I finally found out what the problem was. It seems there was a small amount of play in the splines of the axles and front wheel hubs. The take up of slack as the car changed direction was the clunk. Hope this helps anyone else that comes across a similar noise.

E Sully, thanks for this. My 2012 Coupe is doing the exact same thing. I bought it as a one owner with 38,900 miles on it. A few days after I got the car it started doing this, it has gotten no worse. I was having nightmares of huge $$$$$ coming my way.
