Default Confuse about tranny fluid level and checking method

Hi, today I just got the cvt tranny on my 97 civic HX swapped. While my mechanic was filling up and checking the fluid level, he let the car engine running. I remember that last time when I talked to the technician at my local Honda dealer, he told me to warm the tranny by driving around and then stop and shut the engine. Next check the level. Anyone have any idea about this? I actually drove my car to freeway, came back and shut the engine and the fluid level exceed the maximum level. Please help, I don;t want to ruin the tranny again.
