difference between Ex and Hx?

Engine wise? Well, it has a watered down vtec compared to the ex.

waterdown down vtec, so taht means it has it but not as strong as the ex? and a CVT tranny? also which one would you recommend.

I'd say go EX...but I think HX has the VTEC-e...and with today's gas prices that'd be a good thing

If you can find an HX, get that, definetely. Theyre kinda rare though. The HX and EX both have vtec, the EX is a little quicker, but the HX gets like 40 mpg or so. they both come with power everything standard. But from 96-00 the HX is the only civic with alloy wheels. But yeah, thats only the HX with an automatic that has the CVT, not the stick shift.

I have a 97 HX with a stick, it gets great mileage. The HX doesn't have the painted mirrors, back area around license plate, and the rocker molding area. Also, it does not include AC or a sunroof in stock form.

what type of gas milage you get with your hx?

I get about 37 to 40 mpg and my car has about 245000 miles.
