Just because it doesn't say VTEC doesn't mean you don't have it...
The only 92-00 D-series valve cover that actually says "VTEC" on it is the 94-95 D16Z6 valve cover (94-95 Civic EX/Si and 94-95 del Sol Si).
And VTEC engages at more like 5000-5500 RPM.

D16Y8. It's a Canadian '98 Si, so it would be the equivalent of a USDM '98 EX.
OP, yes, you have vtec (Variable valve Timing and lift Electronic Control, no "H"). It should engage around 5,500rpm (it's computer-controlled, so there are variables involved as to when it engages). You won't feel it (unless there's a problem) and you most likely won't hear it on a single-cam. You can hear it if you have the radio off and really listen to it, but it's nothing like the dual-cam engagement. Basically, the engine gets a little louder.

Just out of my own curiosity..I thought that most Si's came w/ a vtec engine...
