Default Engine Questions:

2 questions:

I have a 97 EX sedan (canadian market version)
1) did all the EX sedans come with v-tec? (the D16y8) Mine is a Y7, and it just seems a little odd that the EX would NOT come with the v-tec motor (unless the previous owner blew it and swapped in something else)
2) the motor has a mere 131,000kms (about 81,000mi) performance (AND price) wise, would it be better to swap the head over to a v-tec? Could I possibly swap to a DOHC v-tec with this block? OR would I be better off swapping over to a higher milage motor with the DOHC v-tec?

Any info would be appreciated...I'm new to the whole upgrade thing. I'm in no rush to do any swaps at the moment, just curious

Yeah, if it's an EX it should be vtec; y8 like you mentioned. probably had a junkyard motor swapped in.

No, you can't put a dual cam head on a single cam block (man, that would just solve everyone's problems though), and I say mini-me to start.

This would explain a coworker of mines problem. he has an 00 Ex and he purchased an AME CAI for this car expecting it to fit, turned out that it didn't fit, and he cant return it... i have a feeling that Canadian Ex's don't have Vtec[:'(]

Mini-me swap? I've seen the term, but I need some more info (being a newb and all) I already am planning on swapping out the intake for a Y8 (should I swap to a Y8 throttle body too? or keep the Y7?) What all do I need to know to swap to the Y8 head? You may safely assume I'm an idot when it comes to this stuff...cuz I likely am! [8D]

I'm asking for the gift of INFO for christmas, from all you fine folk here!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! (drive safe, get a ride if you've been drinking please!)

The Super D is a Canadian EX and he most definitely is VTAK!!!!111.

But, anyway, look in the DIY section. There is a great write up on the mini-me, complete with a shopping list.

Well, Ex is a chassis code. It includes trim and accessories too, but yeah, from the factory, an Ex should be vtec.

How do you nknow it's a y7? Have you looked at the block stamp?

not quite. the SD is a canadian made ex, not a canadian market ex. all of the canadian market civics are bumped up one designation from what we get, or so thats my understanding. the Can-Si is US-Ex, the Can-ex is US-Dx etc etc.

Yes, I checked the engine stamp, it is a Y7 (sadly). from tidbits I've heard here and there, I think you're right that canadian market civics were bumped one designaion. Still...I wish I had the vtec. Mini-me should change that (when I get the $$$)
