chisox64: Since the average temp year round underground in our area is 54 degrees, doesn't that mean we will have more gas in our tank not less when we fill up when the temp is 90 degrees and the gas warms up in our tank?

I put $15.06 in the tank the other day and when I went to pay it was only $14.91. Maybe that has something to do with the temp I dont kow, I just thought it was strange.

Gene,
You will not get more gas when it warms up. It will take up more space, but it will weigh the same and provide the same amount of energy. The problem lies in the pump. If it says you are getting 10 gallons. On a hot day you get less even though the pump still says 10 gallons. In the winter you get more.
If our avg temp is 54, then we are on the win side for an average year. Although, the whole thing revolves around 60 degrees, so we pretty much break even. The guys in LA are the ones who get less all year.
As for the nerd comment, remember its nerds like me that do the engineering for your turbos and stereos. No nerds = No Toys

I was trying to explain the temperature effect if the gas were 90. If the gas is always at 54, I agree there is almost no difference, and it is in the consumers favor. In the warmer parts of the country, I would assume that the ground is warmer than 54. It has some negative effect for them. I think we've beaten this horse to death.

Just a thought... but when I worked at a gas station, it would come almost every night. Twice a day during summer. So the gas can't stay that cool for too long, I'm sure the temp would be hotter during delivery, and all that gas getting emptied into the gas station's tanks would cause enough friction to cause it to be harder to cool once in the underground tank.
I'm sure I'm being too literal. But it doesn't hurt to add in more factors.
