Default Honda civic CVT

I have a 97 Honda Civic Hx with the CVT. I wish i would have looked around a little more before buying that civic but i still love it. It gets about 40 miles to the gallon. I dream of owning a stickshift though. I understand that my civic with the CVT has only about 115 hp. A lot of other civics have way more than that. I was wondereing, is there anyway i can get my Hx hp built up to be pretty fast or should i not bother with it becuase the hp is so low and to just go for looks. Please leave me your advice.

Thank you, Garrett

I wasn't aware that civics were sold with CVTs. The reason that alot of cars don't have CVTs is b/c CVTs run on belts and the belts can't handle much power. If you try to run too much power through ur CVT, the belts will snap (they will prolly keep snapping if u replace them). I wouldn't mod a car with a CVT.

Actually, that's not entirely true anymore. CVT's are getting to where they can handle greater amounts of power than the original versions could. That's not the reason why cars like the Civic HX and all the hybrids I know of, use a CVT transmission. CVT's can keep the engine at it's most efficient rpm for the load and conditions that the car is being driven in at any given time. That's why Garrett's HX is returning 40 mpg!

Having said that, Garrett, AgentofDarkness is probably correct when he says that you'll be risking serious tranny damage is you hop up your engine too much. If you have to have more performance, get a different car. In the mean time, enjoy that 40 mpg!

Steve R.
