I'm just curious... For your 2006 Civic, what did the dealer close you at (minus tax, tags and freight)? List what model you have (EX, DX or LX and whether it was a sedan or coupe). I figure this may help people negotiate the price of a new car.

EX Coupe (Non-Navi) Automatic (yeah I'm lazy)
$17,200

Supply and demand would play a large part on the price wouldn't it? I mean, if everybody's after an Si, EX, whatever, then wouldn't it be a seller's market allowing the dealer to set the price? Just the first thing that came to mind. 19K sounds like a good deal for your friend Pete. I know they'll enjoy it.

where do you live, cloudbreak?
You got that car at invoice, by the way, which is totally amazing. If you check out edmunds.com (I think) it'll tell you that the dealer probably paid $17k for that car and marked it up to the MSRP of $19k.
How did you get such a good deal??

I am in the DC area. I basically talked to 6 dealers within a reasonable distance. All of them said no way to what I wanted. So I kept playing their prices against one another until one made me a deal I couldn't refuse. Plus no dealer add on crap except wheel locks.

Two of my friends just bought the EX Coupe as well. One paid $20,500 for an EX non-Navi Automatic but with a bunch of crazy dealer add ons (including body kit). Another girl I know paid $19,500 (I think) for the same car minus the dealer add ons plus the negative equity from her other Civic...

Hi,

Basically, I purchased my new Civic on the Internet. Here are the details:

My 2006 Civic sedan is an LX with an automatic. I "configured" it on the Honda Website, and submitted the data to local dealers. One dealer came back with a pretty-good price on a coupe via e-mail (I'd input my home e-mail address in at the Honda site). Later, I changed my mind, deciding to get a sedan, which is "more practical" for my daily driver / workplace needs (carrying around computers and such).

Anyway, I went back to Edmunds.com, got the invoice price, added Honda's destination charge, and fog lights price (installed) per the earler dealer quote on the coupe, and fired off an e-mail to the dealer. I did a line-item list of invoice, destination, fog lights, CT sales tax, registration transfer, and listed "$0.00" for "conveyance fee," noted that I'd be paying cash, and fired off the e-mail to the dealer.

The Honda dealer e-mailed me back at $100 over my offer: They basically ate $200 of their $300 "conveyance fee" by taking $200 off of the invoice price. Close enough: I did that deal.

Here's what I paid in late Feb. of 2006 in northern Connecticut:

Invoice: $15,825 (-200) = $15,625
Destination fee: $550 (typical throughout southern New England)
Fog lights: $595 (installed)
Conveyance Fee: $100 (they love to get this)
==========================================
Total: $16,870

You could say that I paid $100 over invoice (not counting the fog lights). Since your posting excludes asking about state sales taxes, registration, etc., the above was my bottom line.

Less $1,000 for my 1996 Civic DX hatch, so my final cost was $15,870 after trade-in.

(Later I added the aux. input jack from the above dealer, and later yet, I purchased all weather mats and the trunk tray from Honda's "e-store" from a different dealer--they cost less that way).

Done. :-)

The dealer told me, when I asked, that, based on their sales volume, they are selling about 20% of their new cars to "internet buyers" like myself. That number is sure to go up in future years.

I had to pay full MSRP for my Si but I got $900 off on the leather seats which I thought was a good deal since I had the first one that came in
