Default I need some knowledge!!

Hey guys!

I just recently picked up a 1990 civic hatchback and I need someone who is knowledgable about these cars to give me some information! The car is in good shape, no rust, with 82k original miles, and I purchased it from the original owner. Purchased primarily for fuel economy. The car has AC, manual roll windows, black interior with vinyl seats. exterior is red. 1.5L 4 cyl single overhead cam.

Ok, I have read that there were 2 different manual transmissions, the 4 speed and a 5 speed manual. My car is undrivable at the moment due to sitting for 11 years, and I am slowly replacing parts here and there to get it going. I shift through the gears and I can only get it into 4 forward gears. Now, I am not sure what trim my car has, I am assuming standard.

I came across an article that said that the standard trim hatchback in 1990 came with a 4 speed manual, but that In Canada it was a 5 speed. My car has a tag under the hood that says "product of canada" or something to that effect. So does that mean its canadian, or not?

I am also trying to figure out the gear ratios, and differences between the 4 and 5 speed manual transmissions.

Thank you for the information ahead of time!

CX model had 4 speed transmission and I think also 8-valve engine. DX model had 5 speed and 16 valve engine. Both engines were 1.5 liter but of course the 16 valve is better. If yours is a DX in stock condition, it should have a chrome "DX" on the back of the car somewhere.

I don't think the 4th gen came in a CX option.

Mine has the 16 valve engine, says right on the valve cover Does anyone have a list or a link for a list of the different transmission options, including gear ratios? I would just like to figure out what I have. I did decode the VIN using the sticky, and mine was def. made in Canada, but I am still unsure which transmission I have. I guess it will be either when I drive it for the first time, or if I decide to go nutz and find a serial or model number on the transmission itself.

Thanks for the info!
