Default Jackstand size?

Quick question for someone. I just got my own jack and jackstands for christmas, so I can return the set I borrowed from my friend in July. The thing is, the stand look like they are too tall. I know that with my friend's stands and a 14 1/2" jack, the stands BARELY fit under the car. My dad bought me the 13 1/2" jackstands and I think I need to exchange them for something smaller, but what size? I'd check the ones I borrowed, but I'm 60 miles away from them right now. I could jack up my car and get a ruler, but I'd rather not. Can someone tell me what size stands would be best for a 14 1/2" jack? I have a 99 coupe and it's not lowered... yet.

so you mean that when you jack it up all the way with a floor jack, the jackstands barely fit under it?

yeah, but I don't know what size those stands were. I guess if nobody knows I'll just jack it up tomorrow and get a ruler.

It's not the size of the jackstand but the lifting ability of the jack :-P

Have you looked into a set of car ramps?

but it IS the size of the jackstands... I have a 14 1/2" jack. Need to know what size stands will fit under the car. Does anyone know what I'm asking?

I don't need ramps. I just can't measure the stands I was borrowing because they are 60 miles away from me.

I dunno how they can be too big? Can't you just jack up the car higher so they fit? I think mine are 13 1/2" and they work fine. (they are craftsman 2 ton)

Until the jack doesn't go any higher. Then you stop. thanks mill$civic.

Let me rephrase the question and just ask what size jack and stands you are all using.

you can use a 2X4 wood block on the top of the jack to get additional lift......KWIM?

Ok...it is 11:00 p.m. (but a nice 50 or so degrees) and I went out to measure my stands for you.....remember, I would not do this for just anyone but I had to do it for you:

One pair of my stands are 11.5 inches tall in the lowest position.

The other pair are 12.5 inches.

Now, as I noted in my previous post... you can use a block to achieve additional lift from your jack which in turn will make you able to get more room under the car when you need it.

Good luck and PLEASE be careful......too many people have been injured by falling cars...
