2008 HONDA CIVIC. ALMOST 156k miles. what can I replace/maintenance to reduce my chances of it breaking down on the side of the road on me?

Timing belt, accessory belt, vacuum hoses, radiator hoses, other than that - anything that's due for replacement. Wheel bearings often get overlooked and in the process they kill brakes and tires.... it's all in your maintenance schedule in the owners manual.

 

thank goodness it doesn't have a timing belt. what does an accessory belt do?

 

Sorry to disappoint, but the chain is not a maintenance free ordeal either. The guides it runs against need to be replaced and the chain itself does stretch over time. The accessory one is the belt driving the AC, alternator, etc

 

YAS,BUT I read your good till about 300kwith chain. yes, I researched accessory belt;also known as serpentine. do u know how many 2008 civic lx has?
