Default Mileage Wars!

With crude oil edging towards $80 a gallon, and 87 octane gasoline going for $3.05 at the cheapest station within 20 miles of my house, I'ved decided to declare Mileage War on the entire world. Here's the stats on my last tank of gas:

446.3 miles on 9.6 miles of 87 octane/$2.99 a gallon fuel, leads to 46.48 miles per gallon!

Take that, Ayatollah Vader!

(2003 Honda Civic DX 4-door sedan, 5mt, limited use of AC and shifting between 2500 and 3500 rpm, depending on traffic conditions. 60% highway, 40% urban/suburban). Don't touch the brakes!

Try for your best mileage against Ayatollah Vader and post them here!

44.67MPG without AC highway 75MPH
35.32MPG WITH AC highway 75mph

that dam AC is a killer!!!!!!!!!

i think when winter comes around im gonna pull my AC belt and see if i can get even more milage with very little extra drag on the motor.

might even try the steering belt also if i can still steer

i notice a huge power drag when i use my AC. also when my stereo is pumpen the engine idle changes... not sure if its the alt pulley worken harder or just crapy voltage from stock alt and stock ground cables....

the more electrical things you run, the harder your alt. has to work so it draws more power from the engine.

You got that right about the AC, it's a parasite even when it's not on and running!

And I've heard about people taking the power steering out of the loop, too; makes you more efficeint and gives you back a couple of horses. I've not driven a Civic without power steering lately, but I'm pretty sure my 82 DX was all manual. It'll help you build up your forearms, at any rate.

Yep, I found I lost a little more than 5 mpg running the AC over the same roads I ran without it.

And watch out for the old argument that it's more efficient to drive at highway speeds with the AC on then it is to drive at highway speeds with the AC off and the windows down, because windows up is less drag. Not true--you loose something like .5 percent fuel effieciency with the windows down, but, depending on the car, you can loose anywhere from 5-20 percent running your AC.

I just drive, i don't really pay attention to how many kilometers i get out of a tank, cause i am going to use it anyway, but on average can get about 350-400 kilometers on $35-$38 worth of gas which is usually arround 33-35 liters so i guess that is about 10-11liters per 100 kilometers

i use ac all the time and am averaging over 35 mpg on an 06 coupe at. lot of stoplights. considering sticker highway is listed at up to 40, i don't think its a big loss to be cool when its 100 degrees here.
