Default n00b question

Okay. This is a noob question on my part. Please try to stop yourself from throwing rocks for just a sec. I know what a EG civic is, and a EF, EK, EP3, etc. But...

Why is my Civic called an EG? I thinkit's because it says "EG" in somewhere the vin number, is it not?

also keep in mind that those are general chassis names. Like many would refer to my car as an EK, but in actuality it is an ej8.
