Default Oil pan Gasket

Ok I haven't even got under my car yet to see if it is easily accessed but the mechanic said I needed a oil pan gasket and said it would be like 450 bucks. Has anyone done a DIY on this? or know where one is?

Holy god! $450 is ridiculous. You should be able to get a Haynes manual (~$20) and an oil pan gasket (~$20) at your local Pepboys/auto parts store and do it yourself. Might as well do an oil change since you have to drain all the oil out, remove the oil pan replace gasket, then put it back together.

Really shouldn't be more than one hour of work.

this is why i have no respect for some mechanics. they try to rip innocent people off. if you dont have any education on cars they rape you. thank god i have a little understanding of cars, this forum, and my gf's father. if not ide be on a bicycle forum from being broke. if doing it yourself. do not tighten the pan bolts to tight. they might break or having to tight might damage the gasket.

ya thats insane price! either go to another shop or do it yourself its not really hard but it is recomended to have a torque wrench! if you snap a oil pan bolt when puting it back on because you overtightened it that can be a PITA to fix! been there done that. so best to torque them down with a 1/4inch ratchet or 3/8 ratchet. a 1/2inch ratchet can easily snap them from overtightening them.

id say also while the pan is down clean out the insides of the oil pan... just bust out the garden hose and some SIMPLE GREEN degreaser spray down the inside of the pan and let it soak in a bit and then hose it all out.... sludge and any metal shavings or other debri can be stuck in some sludge under the internal baffling. simple green degreaser works great!

Hey addicted. What am I in for if the previous owner broke some of the bolts from the oil pan. It leaks oil but don't know how to fix it. Some of the bolts coming out of block are broke and then 1 with the bolt that comes out broke in half and the half is in the block.

with the oil pan down see if you cannt grab them with some pliers, if not buy some easy outs. where you drill a hole in the busted bolt and then use the retractor bit and pull them out.

just remember to use a torque wrench when installing the bolts back in. they are so small and snap so easily! that or just use a 1/4inch ratchet do tigthen them with one hand. you really just snug them up.

well if you have a torque wrench then a 3/8 torque wrench will be good.
