if im driving along at around 40 mph in 4th gear and drop it in to 2nd will this damage my tran at all? the RPMs leap to around 5500.

As long as your rpm's don't shoot into the redline you should be all good.

if u dont rev-match u'll def. put a lot of stress on the motor/trans very quickly. it should be ok since 2nd gear tops out at about 60-65mph but its something i wouldnt do often..
