Well, one thing you need to know about car companies is that when they post power ratings, they are often taken from the crank (before the engine is even in the car). However, they rate it at about 127, so that seems like an awful lot of power to lose in an FF drivetrain. To answer your question, no, premium gas will not regain all that power for you. It will, however, increase your gas mileage and help your car respond quicker (assuming you don't drive it too hard).

19 down from stock isnt too bad because the car probably had quite a few miles on it and they say 10-15% in drivetrain losses, so thats not too bad. esp since we dont know the condition of the motor, if it had a fresh change of 5w-20 oil and new plugs wires and cap and rotor, then itd probably gain a few hp back. and for a mostly stock car, mainly ones without raised compression, advanced timing, or foced induction, the 89 octane should be fine. on a mostly stock car, too high of compression can actually hurt power because the higher the octane is, the slower the fuel burns, so if its too high, it retards the combustion more than necessary.

oh and BTW, Kappa, a dry sump? sweet. how much was it?

My dad actually found most of the parts on a new arrival Type R in a wrecking yard about a month ago (it had been backhalved and thrown over a curb). We had to buy a new pressure hose and a new pump gear, plus some gaskets and stuff, so in the end I ended up shelling out about $400 for it. Not too bad considering the going rates for full kits these days. I'm still trying to work a few bugs out though, since it was a kit designed for B series engines.

Using premium gas on a stock car will not make very much of a difference at all. As listed above, slightly better throttle response, but nothing that will make your car really faster. You'll just end up paying more for gas if you're going to start using premium, and it really won't be worth it. I mean you can start using it and you'll be safe and ok, but I think you're going to get tired of paying $2 or more a gallon. If you want to make your car faster than it is now, you have to change stock parts for performance parts, such as cold air intake, cat back etc...

if you advance the timing and run premium, you should see a little power gain and a nice boost in fuel economy. i did on my sohc non-vtec. i went from about 22-25mpg, to about 30-34, an average of freeway and hard city driving. but remember, advancing it past 18* BTDC will start to hurt the power. and not using higher octane gas will start to hurt the engine (if advanced).
