Default Question on downshifting

What is the proper/best way to downshift from 5th gear to a stop (say going from 50mph to stop given enough distance). is it:
1. release gas, clutch in, press gas to rev up, downshift to next gear, release gas, release clutch

or 2. release gas and continue to cruise in 5th while tapping breaks if needed, once speed slows down, then clutch in and downshift to 4th or 3rd gear (never having to press gas when downshifting).

I usually do the 2nd way. I'm not comfortable tapping the gas while the clutch is still in. never really practiced that so don't know how it'd go.

also, it seems a little weird having to tap the gas while downshifting and slowing down

Use the brakes, when you slow to 15 mph press clutch in and shift to neutral.

Brake pads are much less expensive than clutches and transmissions. Downshifting to slow down on level ground is a waste of money.
