Default roof rust

the roof on my 93 civic has rust lumps bulging throught the paint but has not broken through yet. my dealer says this is quite a common problem among civics and recommends replacing the roof. i don't want to spend so much money on a replacement considering that i might be selling the car in a couple of years' time.

they say that it happens along the roof beam and might run its length. the cheaper alternative is to break through the rust, scrape the visible ones off, cover it with "solder" (?) and sand/grind to flat and repaint.

anyone with the same experience? how long does the second option last? any other suggestions?

Im pretty sure the rust isnt that bad, you just need to scrape that rust off and paint the roof
