Spare D16y8 Engine

Default Spare D16y8 Engine

i just bought a 96 civic ex the guy i bought it from had a spare D16y8 engine he thinks one of the cyclinders is froze bought i want to strip it down and rebuild it. i have never owned a honda before and bought it as a project car. i want to rebuild the engine so its as fast as possible but i dont no where to begin any suggestions????

first I would suggest you rip it down. If there is a piston "froze", then you need to figure out what damage has been done to the cylinders. If one of the cylinders is scared badly, then the only way you'll get that engine running again is to either have it re-sleeved or (if the scars are faint enough) just have it bored and honed.

after you figure that out, you need to decide a horsepower number you'd like to shoot for. Will the car be kept a daily driver even after the built motor is dropped in? Many people say that anything over 300 is useless on the road.

but over 300 is fun.

specifically with the D series motors, decide if you want turbo or not. If you're shooting for over 170 hp, go turbo... it's super expensive otherwise... might as well get eagle H rods and some forged pistons while it's torn down. Then your bottom end will handle whatever HP goal you set out to have.
