I am going to pick up my new to me 1985 civic this weekend. It is in really good shape, and runs great. I have been looking at posts on here, and have a question. What motor will I have? I know its not a vtec B-16, but I am curious as to its code number. I know it is a 1.5 liter with a 3 barrel carb. Without a doubt the smallest engine I have ever owned. I think I could carry it around under my arm. Also what is the code on the tranny, and how difficult is it to swap over to a five speed?

Nah, not a D-series. It's an EW1.

 

I was looking a a honda parts website, and found that it listed my cars motor as a EW1,D15 So, are you both right, or were there two code numbers for the same engine? I also found of through this web sites history section thast the motor is rated at a pathtic 60 horsepower. The thing had better be good on gas, because a kid on a schwinn will be able to outrun me.

 

Well, the reason they listed both the EW1 and the D15 is that the last year of the 3G Civic's (1987) they switched to the D15A2. Your engine IS the EW1, and you're makin' about 75 hp. The D15A2 makes all of 60.
