can u help me out with how all this **** works?

First off, welcome to the forum. Second, How all what **** works? The forum or the jack?

My question is this, if the Jack is actually the jack stand, then those stands must be hydraulic or something, which would make me less comfortable sitting under them than if it was a mechanically locking system like most jack stands.

No they are mechanical. The jack just lifts them adn then sides out. The jack stands are locking ones. Look at the picture, see the slots on the sides, that is where it locks.
